Detailed Description

"Thanks to Dan Burnham, Chicago seems to be the only great city in our States to have discovered its own waterfront." – Frank Lloyd Wright

In the mid 19th century, the Chicago founders promised to keep the stunning lakefront "forever open, clear, and free." Half a century later, having experienced tremendous success as an architectural advisor to the 1893 World's Fair, architect Daniel Burnham began to develop a vision for his beloved hometown. In 1909, Burnham published his 150 page Plan of Chicago, mapping out miles of recreational parks, beaches, lagoons and public museums. As the plan put it, the "Lake Front by right belongs to the people." The plan called for a "network of parks, boulevards, piers, and lagoons," along the immediate lakefront. Visitors to Chicago today can enjoy his endearing legacy. Navy Pier is a hub of activity year round with shopping, the Chicago Children's Museum, Chicago Shakespeare Theater, Crystal Gardens glass atrium palm-tree court, IMAX Theater, Smith Museum of Stained Glass Windows and seasonal events, such as fireworks throughout the summer and a giant Ferris Wheel. Heading north, the Museum Campus provides a day of activities, and a beautiful background for a family picnic, with the Field Museum of Natural History, the Shedd Aquarium and the Museum of Science and Industry. Mayor Richard M. Daley has worked to continue developing the lakefront property to make it even more impressive and inviting. Wanting to rid the downtown lakefront of the parking lots and railroad tracks, Mayor Daley with world renowned architect Frank Gehry, masterfully landscaped the 24.5 acre Millennium Park. Filled with beautiful parks and gardens, monumental sculpture, and areas for dining and relaxing. Among the most popular attractions are Cloud Gate, a 110-ton, 33 foot tall highly polished elliptical sculpture that reflects the city skyline and is referred to by locals as "The Bean" for its kidney bean shape. Along Michigan Avenue, two 50-foot glass block towers or Crown Fountain anchor a shallow reflecting pool, projecting video images of various Chicago citizen's faces and dispensing streams of water onto awaiting visitors below. Music pavilions welcome millions of visitors each summer for outdoor concerts, as well as providing a musical backdrop for the famous 4th of July fireworks and the very popular Taste of Chicago. Northerly Island, just off-shore from the Museum Campus, hosts live concerts and outdoor dining during the summer, bringing a touch of the French Riviera to the Mid-west. Summer in Chicago is one of the most enriching experiences one can enjoy, and we encourage you all to visit our incredible city very soon!
