Detailed Description

Since few things about a culture are more revealing than food, travelers on Route 66 have the benefit of a massive picture window into the culinary past & present of this nation. For travelers along this historic thoroughfare, food is a source of comfort, a revelation of new experiences, and a mirror of the "tastes" & lifestyle in each succeeding community. Along the approximately 2,400- mile span of highway, a simple bowl of chili, for example, can take on entirely different characteristics as one travels from Chicago to LA. Prohibition, the Great Depression, the Dust Bowl, and World War II influenced food served during 85+ years since Route 66 was commissioned. While many American food habits have changed forever, especially with the domination of the automobile and the proliferation of drive-thru windows, some old favorites like chicken- fried steak and bread pudding remain. However, lard is no longer part of our culinary vocabulary, and many youngsters today would be hard-pressed to even tell you what it is. Diet, health, trans-fat free, and organic are today's buzzwords. Since Historic Route 66 continues to offer mile upon mile of valuable culinary treasures, you just might have to forget about speed and schedules for a week or ten days & drive off into small town America. There you'll undoubtedly discover some of the delicious morsels that have contributed to our national menu over the past 6-1/2 decades, in venues that range from sumptuous hotel dining rooms to greasy-spoon diners. Route 66 aficionados & devotees can regale you with innumerable descriptions of their favorite "Eats" along the "Mother Road" & we'd suggest you seek one of these experts out, whether in cyberspace, in print or in person! At least one entire book and many, many web pages have been written on this tasty topic. Everyone has their favorite joint, and we could never scratch the surface of the selections along this beloved, historic roadway, so we'll just say that the choices are diverse, delicious & plentiful...and, the calories don’t count if you're on vacation!
