Chicago has long been regarded as one of America's greatest sports towns. From the die-hard Blackhawks fans who clap and cheer loudly through the entire National Anthem, to the Bears fans who brave the harsh winter elements for a chance to see the men in orange and blue defeat their arch rival, the Green Bay Packers. Chicago has produced some of the most storied franchises and teams in all of US sports. In 1919, the south side's Chicago White Sox made it to the coveted World Series and were heavily favored to beat the Cincinnati Reds. In the best of 7 series, the Reds defeated the White Sox five games to two. Rumors of a "fix" turned into legal allegations, and in 1920 eight players from the White Sox were charged with conspiring to throw the series in exchange for cash from a couple of notorious gamblers. Chicago baseball fans love the cross-town rivalry between the south side White Sox and the Chicago Cubs on the city's north side. When the two teams play each other, fans hop on the Red Line of the "EL" which takes them from one ball park to the other. It's been over a century since the "Lovable Losers" on the north side have won a World Series, leaving fans each September to cry "Maybe Next Year." Despite the championship drought, historic Wrigley Field packs fans in all season long, and a whole "Wrigleyville" community has developed around the park making one’s sojourn there a fun-filled adventure before, during and after the game with outdoor eateries, sports bars and shopping. The single most famous Chicago athlete unquestionably is Michael Jordan from the Chicago Bulls basketball team. His incredible talent and record shattering career lead the Bulls to win six NBA Championships. Although his persona and image have become somewhat superhuman in sports lore, he is humbly quoted as saying, "I can accept failure. Everyone fails at something. But I can't accept not trying." New to the Chicago sports scene is the Chicago Fire Soccer Team. Although it is said that soccer, which the rest of the world calls football, is still a budding venture in the states, the Fire have been gaining momentum and have recently moved into a brand new stadium. Chicago also has the distinction of being home to one of the original six hockey teams in the National Hockey League, the Chicago Blackhawks. Great advancements in hockey have been made by Blackhawks' center Stan Mikita who played on the last championship team in the 1960s. He created the curved bottom stick after an fortuitous accident occured when his stick got caught in a doorway and bent to the point of cracking slightly. His shots became stronger, faster and more accurate. He also developed the hockey helmet after suffering a head injury. We hope when you visit Chicago you will take in a sporting event...and wear a fabulous new outfit made from our Chicago collection!
