Hawai’i Intrigue is a colorful knit featuring stripes of red, steel, celery, mango and beige that undulate with the knit pattern.  The reverse has a cool look as well, so don’t hesitate to incorporate that as your contrast accents.It is lightweight enough for sewing all manner of all-way stretch knit tops, and substantial enough for wearing as a knit dress or skirt.

We receive many requests for all natural fibers, especially cottons, and we did try to fill our Summer 2022 Catalog with as many as we could muster. We picked up two “Waikiki Cotton Poplin” prints from the fashion division of Robert Kaufman for our Summer 2022 fashion fabrics catalog.  Deities Maui features beige hibiscus, pineapples, leaves, huts, and water on navy blue, while Deities Kona (VF223-12) is the same print in red and white. We tossed into our Summer 2022 catalog Volcano Blooms for good measure, with its various shades of blue flowers.  Like our other 66" wide, rayon/spandex, all-way stretch knit fashion fabrics, this is super soft, has wonderful fluidity, and is breathable. When sewing these lightweight knits, we recommend you use the Design Plus Superfine Fusible Bias Tape to easily stabilize your seams and neckline.  And don’t forget to use fresh ball point size 10 needles for the best results.

Hula Flutter is a contemporary abstract print on polyester crepe georgette.  This is the ideal fabric for a sarong or a squared-off scarf-style shirt to wear over a bathing suit at a posh pool.  You can also wear it as a loose top over a knit cami, which will look sharp when worn with summer slacks tailored from Hula Foam, a white rayon and linen blend (VF223-20).

Hula Foam is a white rayon and linen blend that has a wonderfully summer brightness to it.  The amount of rayon in this fabric tones down the typical linen wrinkles, so you can have the look of linen without the creases. You can dry clean it to retain its original look, or you can wash and dry it to soften it for a more casual look. The weight is ideal for lightweight tops (you may want a tank or bandeau under it), or stitch it into drawcord pants to wear to the pool or beach.  It will also be wonderful as an embroidered, lined sundress.

When we think of the tropics, palm trees swaying in an ocean breeze springs to mind. We have incorporated Lei Palm, a richly colored poly-cotton twill, to brighten up your summer wardrobe. Another solid option for shorts or a shirt is Lu’au Aqua, a stretch-woven poly-cotton lightweight twill. From the fashion division of Robert Kaufman comes Monarch Oxford lavender and white stripe cotton.  This breathable fabric is surprisingly supple for an Oxford cloth and it has a soft hand, which opens up wonderful possibilities for garments. You can make a summer jacket and shorts, construct a button down shirt, or choose a pattern like Sewing Workshop’s Hibiscus which allows you to place some of the fabric on the bias for added visual interest.

The next two prints are from the designers at Bernard Chaus.  Vista Lā and Vista Pō (Hawaiian for daytime and nighttime) are heavy crepe georgette fabrics featuring wispy umbels blowing against the fabric. Use these together as contrasts in one garment, or create the same outfit in both fabrics for more wardrobe options.  Their weight and drape make them ideal choices for flowing skirts, a-line dresses, stylish tunics, and cowl-neck tops.
