Busks, for those of you who have not heard the term, are metal clasps that close the centre front of a corset. Opening busks did not come into use until the mid 1800’s. A corset busk consists of two long pieces of steel, one with steel knobs and the other one steel loops/eyes. The busk pieces are sewn into the corset on either side of the centre front (see the photo), lacing is still used in the back or sides but the busk allows getting into and out of the corset by oneself. Photo enlarged to show detail.
Straight busks are most common and are white with a plastic looking nylon coating. This European busk is from Farthingales, North America's leader in excellent quality steel corset products for long term use.
